Dear Mr Baker

Thank you for your email dated 15 May 2009 concerning the excise duty amount for an imported bottle of ouso.

The exise rates for alcoholic beverages can be found in chapter 22 of the Working Tarrif Document of New Zealand, which is available on the website of the New Zealand Customs Service (www.customs.govt.nz).

In the Working Tarrif Document, ouzo is classified within tarrif item number 2208.97 and is liable for excise duty of $45.105 per litre of alcohol. The amount of import duty payable on a 700ml bottle of ouzo with a 40% alcohol by volume content would be $12.63. GST is also payable in addition to import duty charges.

With respect to the Olympic brand of ouzo, please be aware that commercial importers must check there are no branding (trade mark) issues with the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand (www.iponz.govt.nz) prior to importation.

Yours sincerely

(signed)

Hon Maurice Williamson
Minister of Customs
